Book Recommendation: Florynce "Flo" Kennedy -- The Life Of A Black Feminist Radical

Title and Author
: Florynce "Flo" Kennedy The Life of A Black Feminist Radical by Sherie M. Randolph

Why is this book important? This book gives a comprehensive history of the feminist, civil rights, and Black power movements. It discusses a number of contributions made by Florynce Kennedy and other feminists of color that are often whitewashed from the Feminist movement. It also focuses on Kennedy's dedication to intersectionality and the steps she took to unite these movements. It addresses the tendency of the media to define the Feminist movement as a movement for young, pretty, white women. And, it lays out the strategies used by Kennedy to gain national coverage and attract more people to the various movements.

What did you like most about the book? Least? I loved this book. At first I had misgivings that the book would be more of a history primer rather than an insightful look into Florynce Kennedy as a person. However, those fears were quickly put to rest as I realized the importance of the historical context of the information presented. Her life seemed to be intrinsically linked to organizing. It's wonderful to have her contributions documented in this way. There wasn't really anything that I disliked about this book. Except the fact that I had to stop reading every few pages to look up interesting references!

What is your favorite quote from the book? It's hard to pick out one quote from the book without using an entire excerpt. But, here's a pretty famous quote from Florynce "Flo" Kennedy: "If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament."
